Out of left field comes word that The Penfield project is alive and kicking again. The design is scaled back again, but still looks complete to me. It’s no longer the amazing skyline changing building that it once was, but you can’t beat having a Lund’s a stone’s throw away.
What’s peculiar is the addition of “townhomes” along 11th Street. I’ll be interested to hear if this is rental townhomes or ownership. My money is on rentals, as 11th Street is a bit of a drag of a view compared to what 10th Street will be looking at in the coming years (Pedro Park).
CapitolRiver Council will review the project (rubber stamp) the project tomorrow morning and the Mayor should be making an announcement it on Wednesday.

Good to hear something might get done…. but man….this is a far cry from that huge 40 story skyscraper dream of a few years back. I just hope this doesn’t transform into a three story rental with an Aldi before it’s all said and done.
Wow! This is so exciting. I would definitely consider moving downtown if there was a Lund’s. Besides, it just makes sense. Isn’t the point of living downtown to have things close to you? Pedro Park should spruce up Robert Street, too. Exciting!
As long as Lund’s is involved, I’ll be waiving my flag of support. I can’t say I’m happy with the dulled down version this has become – but if that’s what it takes to get a Lund’s down here, so be it.
I think the rubber stamp slam is unworthy of you Bud. You have been on the council and should know how hard the Development Review Committee of the council works to insure that develpoment in downtown is appropriate.
Michael Heelan CRC member and Downtown Resident.
Hi Micheal, I do know how hard the development review committee works. But to give the plans to them the day before the mayor makes a major announcement and kind of lame. If CRC found fault in the new plan, I highly doubt the developer would have stopped in their tracks to pacify the development review council.
What exactly was the point of the developer bringing the new plans to the council the day before the Mayor’s speech about it?
In the beginning, the Penfield project was very open to the review process, but as this drags out, they have become somewhat of a recluse.
